CEEP-CHURCH ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT PROJECT

Poverty is a reality that the church can no longer ignore. 65% of Kenya’s population live on less than a dollar a day. The Christian faith boasts of 80% of the total population, meaning a large population of the poor make up the church. CEEP enhances the capacity of poor to cope by providing entrepreneurship training in starting and running small businesses, small-scale agriculture and microcredit.

Ceep has started a hairdresssing schoool in mukuru kayaba slum in Nairobi as one of their projects.

Goal of Project.
The Hairdressing school will provide livelihood skills to young adult girls and boys and single mothers whose livelihood status would otherwise make them vulnerable to abuse or vices such as  prostitution, drugs or crime. This project is in keeping with City Harvest’s multifaceted approach to tackling the spread of HIV/AIDS among the youth.  It is noted that Mukuru Kayaba slum like Kibera slum where a similar sister project is successfully running, is a place where many young people settle upon arrival from the rural areas seeking employment which to their dismay is not easily available.

Rationale
The beauty industry in Kenya is perhaps the least affected by economic downturns. On the contrary, jobs in the field are being created regularly as well as opportunities for self employment. Herein lays an opportunity for the church to be salt and light by creating opportunity to the youth while bearing witness to Jesus Christ.
